Canterbury - April 2006

(Above) West Gate, one of several ancient gatehouses in Canterbury.  This gate stands at the Western end of the High Street.

A very picturesque narrow street leading to the Cathedral

Part of the city walls to the East of the city.

Another very ornate Gatehouse to the West of the city.

Burgate?

A very Modernist Superdrug store which provides a very nice contrast with the older building styles.

Canterbury Castle, a very imposing ruin which is open free of charge to the public, superb value!

Inside the castle, just to the left of the centre you can see where there used to be a narrow spiral staircase.

Inside the castle.

Inside the castle.  You can clearly see here where floors and fireplaces used to be.

Dane John Mound, the centrepiece of Dane John Park, a very pleasant landscaped park within the city walls.  Unfortunately, it was wet and windy when I visited!

View from the top of the mound, showing the Inner Ring Road.

Overlooking the park with the Cathedral in the distance.

Very pleasant parkland, no doubt this area would be very busy if it had not been rainy.

Looking East although this shot is somewhat spoiled by the rather spartan gasholder.

Canterbury East station, for trains to London Victoria.  Due to a fault, there were no trains running here at all on the day - which scuppered my plan of taking a different route back.  Note the presence of semaphore signals at the end of the platform - a rarity nowadays!

Another view of the East station, showing a fine signalbox and a semaphore gantry.

Another view of Dane John's Mound and the city walls.

Canterbury West station, for trains to Charing Cross.  While modern colour light signals have been installed here, the bridge-mounted signalbox is of interest.

Another view of Canterbury West.  The large wasteland between the tracks shows that the station is only a shadow of what it used to be.
