My first sight on leaving Newcastle Central station was this: Westgate House. It was recently voted among the top 10 worst buildings in Britian although I think the location is more of an issue than the architecture, it really muscles in on the Georgian building next door and dominates the view.

When I arrived in Newcastle, there was a fresh layer of snow, this is Grainger Street, a fine avenue of Georgian shop buildings leading from the station to the central shopping district.
4
One of the many entrances to Eldon Square Shopping Centre. There was an outcry in the 60s/70s when a vast area of Georgian buildings was swept away to make way for this vast structure.
5
This is Eldon Square itself, now completely surrounded by the shopping centre. This photo does not do the scale of the buildings any justice but the John Lewis store to the right of the shot is truly vast. To the left, a small part of the shopping centre has been demolished, the frontage on the square is being 'redeveloped'

This 1960s building gaurds the entrance to Northumberland Street, Newcastle's main shopping street.
